An estimated one million Americans contract shingles every year, and about half are individuals 60 years and older. Additionally, more than 60 percent of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations occur in people 65 years and older. As we age our immune systems tend to weaken over time, putting us at higher risk for certain diseases. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends several vaccinations for individuals ages 60 and older – please see recommended immunizations chart attached.
The Zoster vaccination (for shingles) and flu vaccine should be administered annually unless contraindicated. A Td vaccine (Tetanus and Diphtheria) or Tdap vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) is recommended every 10 years.
Pneumococcal vaccinations, which protect against pneumococcal disease, including infections in the lungs and bloodstream, are recommended for older adults and those who have certain chronic health conditions. This vaccination is usually administered either in one or two doses.
Vaccinations should be discussed with a physician or other healthcare professional to determine the appropriate vaccination program for each individual. Please contact one of our pharmacists at Winyah Pharmacy if you have questions about the vaccination program.
